Overview

Fredbear's Family Diner was a local American restaurant and entertainment center launched in 1979 by cofounders Henry Emily and William Afton.

Animatronics

The diner primarily featured two animatronic mascot characters: A yellow bear called Fredbear and a yellow rabbit called Spring Bonnie, each donning purple accessories. Both of these characters used patented springlock animatronic technology, which allowed the mechanisms within to be recoiled onto the inner walls of the suit, creating enough space for an employee to wear it as a costume for lifelike performances. In this way, the same model could be used as either a functioning animatronic or a wearable costume.

This springlock technology would be carried over to future Fazbear Entertainment establishments, but would be criticized for the lack of concern for the safety of the wearer. Errors in the operation of the suit could easily result in the springlocks breaking loose, potentially causing the animatronic to shift modes while an employee is inside. Fortunately, this is not known to have ever taken place; however, the technology would nonetheless be discontinued in 1985.

In July of 1983, toward the end of the restaurant's operation, the Puppet animatronic was introduced. The Puppet dwelled within a large prize box near the entrance, which they would pop out of to surprise guests.

Closure

Fredbear's was forced to close for good following the death of Charlotte Emily on the night of October 31st, 1983. The location was not able to continue operating without the support of co-owner Henry Emily, who was grief stricken, and the company was interested in rebranding with new animatronic characters taking a central role. This closing was proceeded by the opening of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza shortly afterward, where the Fredbear's cast of animatronics would be repurposed.

"The loss of life which has taken place here has become too much for me to endure. I'm sorry, to my daughter, and to those whose losses have not been properly recognized. I'm sorry."

- Henry Emily

"I can only imagine what Henry must be going through now. It's horrible, a tragedy, of course. And I'm sure Fredbear's will be sorely missed. But I know that eventually, we will all come to see this as an opportunity, to go further, to create something new."

- William Afton
